My steady Wednesday in Westchester County:

Carmen Leggio had a steady Wednesday with his trio at the Red Hat on the River, at One Bridge Street, Irvingon, NY, for about four years.  Hiroshi Yamazaki was the keyboard player, and I was on bass.  We loved playing there with Carmen, and miss him a lot.

Hiroshi and I are continuing that gig every Wednesday from six to ten.

Twice a month Glenda Davenport sings with us.

( On the Wednesdays that Glenda is not with us at the Red Hat, guitarist Takeshi Ogura joins us.)

My other current work is mostly around New York's Westchester and Putnam Counties and in Connecticut, with occasional appearances at the Garage in Greenwich Village, NYC, with Lou Caputo's Not So Big Band. (12 musicians)

In May 2009 WNYC in New York hosted a concert in their Green Space auditorium that featured some of the musicians who used to play at the jam sessions in the lofts at 821 6th Avenue.  They filmed the concert and some of the backstage chat. It can be found at this link.  Scroll down to the video.  A nice last look at the late Dick Katz.

Also in May 2009 I played on a special program on station WBGO in Newark celebrating Benny Goodman's centennial. It was put together by Paquito D'Rivera, who played Benny's part, and included the late John Bunch on piano, Dave Samuels on vibes, James Chirillo on guitar and Ron Vincent on drums.

I often play for Michelle LeBlanc, a jazz singer who presents programs with different themes, mostly in concert halls around Westchester and Putnam counties in New York State.  The band below is one she often puts together:

Bill Crow on Bass, Ed Xiques on reeds, Michelle, Ron Vincent on drums, and Tom Kohl on piano.

(Sometimes our reed player is Joe Stelluti.)

MUSEUM PROJECT: “Laughing Through A Life In Jazz”

August 2: Take it from Letter A; the Early Years

August 9: Lullaby of Birdland; Jazz in the early 1950s

August 16: Bill Crow on Record; 1952 to today.

August 23: The Gerry Mulligan Years.

I gave personal glimpses of the jazz world as I have known it, illustrated with video clips and recordings.

The museum’s recording machine failed on the first lecture, but the rest were preserved, and the audio clips can be found HERE.

CURRENT EVENTS

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A new steady gig has appeared, at Mariela’s Wine and Espresso Bar in Pound Ridge, NY, every Friday from 8 to 11 PM with the Doug Proper Trio (sometimes a quartet). Doug plays the seven-string guitar, and Gerry Fitzgerald is the drummer. We have occasional guest soloists like trumpeter Kenny Lee and saxophonist Andrew Beals.  A charming little venue.
